{"id":2967,"date":"2017-04-10T08:00:23","date_gmt":"2017-04-09T23:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/?p=2967"},"modified":"2026-05-15T19:55:31","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T10:55:31","slug":"dealing-with-concrete-rain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/norimen.net\/en\/trouble-handling-concrete-rain\/","title":{"rendered":"Troubleshooting (Part 1) | What to Do When It Rains During Concrete Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello, everyone.<\/p>\n<p>This is Enta.<\/p>\n<p>The other day, the cherry blossoms at the Iwakura Cherry Blossom Festival were in full bloom, and it was absolutely packed with people!<\/p>\n<p>It must have been really tough being stuck in traffic all over the place.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2968\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/9e36794e55ede8eda8eea143a98f2b14-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"460\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, I was working at another venue as the guy running the shooting gallery, serving the kids.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to that, I'm totally wiped out lol<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2969\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/0d3af412f2e519a451a2e84347bde851-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/0d3af412f2e519a451a2e84347bde851-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/0d3af412f2e519a451a2e84347bde851-1-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>But that's beside the point.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For this first installment, we\u2019ll look at a classic example: concrete.<\/p>\n<p>After all, even we slope contractors use a lot of concrete and mortar.<\/p>\n<p>It's a standard material in the civil engineering industry, isn't it?<\/p>\n<p>I use it all the time, but concrete is really complex.<\/p>\n<p>I guess the only people who really understand this are concrete technicians at ready-mix plants, right? lol<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 20px; text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E3%82%B3%E3%83%B3%E3%82%AF%E3%83%AA%E3%83%BC%E3%83%88%E6%8A%80%E5%A3%AB\" target=\"_blank\">What Is a Concrete Engineer?<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What should you do if it suddenly starts raining while you're installing the formwork or applying sprayed mortar?<\/p>\n<p>Light rain might be okay, but what if there\u2019s a torrential downpour?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It depends on the season and temperature, but if about an hour has passed since the spray application, it should still be fine, but,<\/p>\n<p>When freshly poured concrete is exposed to rain, the water-cement ratio on its surface increases dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>An increase in the water-to-cement ratio improves workability but reduces strength.<\/p>\n<p>Sprayed mortar and concrete inherently have higher workability, so their standard strength is relatively low.<\/p>\n<p>Not only are the settings already on the low side, but there are parts where they\u2019ll be even lower.<\/p>\n<p>As a result,<strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The difference in strength between that section and the rest of the structure can cause cracks and other issues.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, here are some solutions.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Since I'd prefer not to get it wet, I'll cover that area with a sheet.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Lightly chisel away part of the sprayed surface from that day, reapply the lath over it, and spray it again.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Apply a finishing coat over the areas where calcium is visible.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I don't do spray painting on days when it looks like it might rain lol<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000; font-size: 20px;\"><strong>If there are any mistakes or construction defects, we'll redo the work.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is the basic principle. In particular, deterioration in concrete products becomes noticeably apparent over time.<\/p>\n<p>Please be careful.<\/p>\n<p>If you try to do something that's beyond your capabilities, you'll regret it later.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>See you later.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello, everyone.
